The Effects of Using Melody on the Verbal Memory in Patients with Schizophrenia

Abstract

|
Objectives£ºA wide range of cognitive deficits occur in schizophrenia and cognitive remediation has been applied to the care of schizophrenic patient. This study was designed to investigate the effects of melody therapy on the verbal memory in an attempt to find out the possibility of music therapy for cognitive rehabilitation program in schizophrenic patients.
Methods£ºThirty schizophrenic patients were randomly divided into two groups. One was a experimental group for melody training, the other was a control group for simple reading training. Three days after training Rey-Kim Memory Test was given to all of the patients.
Results£ºThe experimental group showed more significant improvement in immediate recall and delayed recall than the control group. There was no significant difference of delayed recognition between two groups.
Conclusion£ºThis study suggests that music therapy may improve the cognitive deficits including verbal memory in schizophrenic patients.
